Julia Karpov understands painting as an improvisatory, almost musical process, the brush becomes a baton, painting becomes a performance as well as an object at the same time. The artist understands her practice, which combines painting with writing, performance, sculpture and film, as a total work of art: not only as a producer of images, but as the embodiment of a continuous artistic process. Themes such as spirituality, existence, social ruptures and the question of creating beyond external expectations run through her work.
